The successful ITV spin-off of The Chase quiz show, Beat the Chasers, will not include new star Darragh Ennis when she debuts a second season in early January.
Irish research neuroscientist Ennis has been a popular addition to the longtime tea show, with its debut watched by 4.9 million viewers, and Beat the Chasers has been a welcome variation of The Chase format. So why isn’t he starring in the second season?
RadioTimes.com understands that his absence from the series is due to programming.
A source close to the show said the pandemic and changing schedules meant it was uncertain whether Ennis would have debuted in The Chase when Beat the Chasers was screened. It would have been strange to feature him in the spin-off if he hadn’t appeared on the parent show yet.
Ennis first appeared in The Chase on Thursday 19 November.
Dubbed ‘The Menace’, Ennis has yet to be beaten by the competition and made history by offering a player last week £ 120,000 if she climbed high, which she only did to lose his pursuit.
Proving he has an advantage for himself, Ennis tweeted: “120k? Lose more race for the bus. “
Beat the Chasers turns the Chase concept on its head: instead of four competitors facing a single hunter, a competitor can face between two and five chasers. The more they take, the bigger the pot of money they can win.
Prosecutor Anne Hegerty was optimistic about the new program.
“We are definitely looking to do more as soon as possible,” said Anne RadioTimes.com after the first screened series. “We knew when we were shooting it that it was a really good show, we were like, ‘It’s really exciting, we have such close finishes.”
The screens of the second season of Beat the Chasers on ITV on Sunday January 3 and takes place every night at 9 p.m. for seven episodes, with the exception of January 9.
