Arsenal are in the running to engage Leipzig central defender RB Leipzig, Dayot Upamecano, according to reported information.

Unai Emery wants to reinforce his defensive options in the summer transfer window, but his budget has been limited due to the team's inability to secure football in the Champions League for next season.

Emery would have spent about £ 100 million if Arsenal qualified for the Champions League next season, but the 4-1 defeat of Chelsea in Baku on Wednesday night means the Gunners will be in the Europa League.

This means that Emery's budget will be around £ 40 million, while several targets could be carried over to Arsenal because of the absence of Champions League football.

According to ESPN, Arsenal wants to sign Upamecano, while RB Leipzig is aware of the interest of the Gunners.

But the report also states that the 20-year-old will not seek a transfer to Arsenal as his club is in the Europa League.

Arsenal will also struggle to meet the price requested by RB Leipzig because of its limited transfer budget.

Upamecano would have a release clause of 100 million euros in its contract with RB Leipzig, which will expire in 2021.

The French defender was also on the verge of joining Manchester United while he was playing for Valenciennes.
