DC cancels new Gods movie and Aquaman the Trench spin-off

Ava DuVernay’s New Gods and James Wan’s Aquaman spin-off The Trench are officially canceled at Warner Bros. and DC Films, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“As part of our DC roster, some legacy development titles, including New Gods and The Trench, will not be moving forward,” Warner Bros. and DC in a statement to THR. “We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The projects will remain in their skillful hands if they were. to move forward in the future. “

DuVernay took to Twitter on Thursday to express his disappointment with the development.

“Tom, I loved writing NEW GODS with you,” DuVernay wrote. “I am upset that the saga of Barda, Scott, Granny, Highfather and The Furies ends this way. King also expressed his dismay at the cancellation of the project and the appreciation for DuVernay’s work.

“Ava! I’m incredibly proud of the work we have done, it was such a joy to see you bring your passion and talent to these characters,” King tweeted. “I really felt Kirby’s legacy was honored here and I wish we could continue. That Barda / Scott scene where… damn.

DC Extended Universe: Every Upcoming Movie

While plans are on hold, for now, THR sources have indicated that DC Films and Warner Bros. leave the door open to future adaptations. DC and WB reportedly felt that the two films did not fit into DC’s next few years of superhero entries and preferred not to leave the production teams in limbo.

DuVernay (Selma, Scandal) was originally brought in to collaborate with comic book writer Tom King (The Vision, Batman) on New Gods, a group of overpowered individuals who emerged after the destruction of the classic gods. DuVernay is still currently working on DC’s Naomi series for CW.

Wan (Saw, The Conjuring), who previously helmed 2018’s Aquaman, was also set to produce a horror-focused spin-off called The Trench. The film would explore more of the race of evil deep-water creatures that Aquaman fights. Wan also worked with longtime production partner Peter Safran. Aquaman 2 would focus on the plot elements introduced in the Silver Age Black Manta comics.

The appearance of the villainous Darkseid in Zack Snyder’s Justice League further complicated Duvernay’s New Gods movie. DC Films reportedly felt that there wouldn’t be enough space between Justice League and New Gods, who also planned to feature Darkseid as the central antagonist.

DC’s upcoming movie roster is the company’s attempt to establish a more cohesive continuity between the films. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is set to introduce a spinoff focused on John Cena’s Peacemaker character, while Matt Reeve’s The Batman spawns a Gotham Police Department series.
