Death of actor father Ted Pat Laffan at the age of 79

Pat Laffan – known for his role as slag Pat Mustard in the Channel 4 sitcom, father Ted – died at the age of 79.

His agent confirmed the news with a statement Thursday, while Ted's father's creator, Graham Linehan, went to Twitter to express his sadness about the news.

He wrote, "I just heard the sad news that Pat Laffan, who was playing Pat Mustard in Father Ted, has pbaded away. Rest in peace, Pat, a pleasure to work with you.

Her agent Lisa Richards issued a statement, announcing the news.

"It is with great sadness that we at Lisa Richards can confirm the pbading of Pat Laffan today," she said.

"Pat was one of the very first clients of the agency, but much more than that. He was a close friend, mentor, and extremely important supporter of the company's founders, Lisa and Richard Cook, and for many agency staff who had: the pleasure of representing him and working with him over the last thirty years.

"While Irish audiences probably remember better Pat for his portrayal of Mr. Burgess in Roddy Doyle's The Snapper (1993) and as Pat Mustard, the famous milkman in Father Ted (Channel 4, 1998), he had almost 40 credits and 30 credits in his name.

The Irish star was also known to represent Georgie Burgess in The Snapper, as well as roles in television series Ripper Street and the movie adaptation of War Horse by Steve Spielberg.

In fact, Pat had originally auditioned for the role of Father Fintan Stack, played by Brendan Grace. When he failed to get the role, Pat was chosen as Pat Mustard.

Pauline McLynn, who played Mrs. Doyle, the housekeeper of Craggy Island Parochial House, posted on Twitter a brief tribute to Laffan: "RIP, the wonderful Pat Laffan".

The character of the sleazy milkman Pat Mustard was positioned as Mrs. Doyle's love interest, and the screenwriters of the show deduced that he slept with all the women to whom he delivered milk every morning.

Other credits include The Saint in 1997, The Queen in 2006 and the Leap Year in 2010. He also appeared in the BBC soap opera EastEnders and in the medical drama of RTE, The Clinic.

He had shot a last, somewhat poetic film, entitled Laid To Rest, currently in post-production. The short film is expected to come out this year.
