Pernell Whitaker, Olympic gold medalist and four-division champion considered one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time, died as a result of a collision with a car in Virginia. He was 55 years old.
Virginia Beach police said the veteran had been hit by a car Sunday night. The driver of the car remained on the scene and the police said she was investigating the circumstances of the death.
Sweet Pea was Whitaker's nickname, and it suited him perfectly. He was a master of the strikes and did not get cut, a left-hander who slipped and came out of the pocket and rarely gave an opportunity to an opponent to score a net goal.
