The TMZ entertainment news site reports that Ingram was suffering from brain cancer.
Born in Ohio in 1952, Ingram later moved to Los Angeles and began his career with the band Revelation Funk. He also played the keyboard for Ray Charles before his own musical career took flight.
He sang on Quincy Jones' album The Dude in 1981 and won the Grammy for Best Male Vocal Performance for the song One Hundred Ways the following year, when he was also nominated for the title of best new artist.
Jones and he will co-write Pretty Young Things, the sixth single from Michael Jackson's Thriller album.
There are no words to express how much my pain hurts me the news of the death of my little brother, James Ingram. With that moving whiskey-like voice, James was just magical. He was and always will be, without comparison. Rest in peace my little brother … you will be in my forever pic.twitter.com/oZtA9h8uZR

The singer-songwriter has also worked on film soundtracks.
He was nominated for the Best Original Oscar Academy Award in 1994 and 1995 for Beethoven's 2nd and Junior songs, respectively.

So sad to hear that. I met James for the first time in Shalamar. He played on the album "Friends" and co-wrote on another. Such talent, vocally and musically, a family man, witty and wise. My condolences to his family and friends ??✨? Stay in paradise James Ingram. https://t.co/Md3Wzdccw3
