The first freely elected Tunisian president and the world's oldest president, Beji Caid Essebsi, pbaded away at the age of 92, the presidency said.

He was the oldest president in the world.

He was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday but the authorities did not explain why he was being treated.

Essebsi won the first free elections in Tunisia in 2014 following Arab uprisings in the region.

Earlier this year, he announced that he would not participate in the elections scheduled for November.

Essebsi was also admitted to the hospital last month after suffering what officials have described as a "serious health crisis".

They did not give more details. Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, who visited him at the hospital, urged the population to stop broadcasting "false news" about his condition.

Former Tunisian President Zine el-Abedine Ben Ali was ousted in 2011 after 23 years in office.

Since then, Tunisia has been hailed as the only democracy to emerge from the revolutions of the so-called Arab Spring.
