The Tunisian presidency announced on social media on Thursday that Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi had died. He was 92 years old.

Essebsi was hospitalized Wednesday night at the military hospital in Tunis, the statement said. He had already been hospitalized on June 27 for a "serious illness".

Essebsi was the first democratically elected president in 2014, three years after the dismissal of Zine el Abidine ben Ali. He died a few months before the end of his term.

After being hospitalized in June, Essebsi signed a decree earlier this month calling for Tunisian voters to go to the polls for the October 6 legislative elections and the November 17 presidential election.

According to the head of the Tunisian government, Youssef Chahed, Essebsi is opposed to the forthcoming elections, which Chahed had proposed.

Early Thursday morning, Essebsi's son, Hafedh, had posted a photo of his father saying goodbye on his Facebook page, before the news was officially confirmed.
