The body of a decomposed Fulani flock, presumed to have been murdered and buried in a shallow pit, was exhumed on Tuesday by a team of policemen and health workers in Ayiwata-Domekope, a farming village located in the district of North Tongu, in the Volta region.
The deceased, identified by his relatives and other Fulani, was Yahaya Mahamadu, 25 years old.
His flashlight, his Wellington boots, his water tank, his blue plastic food container and a piece of sugar cane stick with which he had gone were also found in the grave.
People who flocked to the site had to hold their noses permanently because of the high stench coming from the body, despite frequent fumigations.
Alhaji Abubakar Siddique Hogo, secretary of the Fulani community badociation in the district, told the Ghana News Agency on the site that he had been informed last Friday at his Juapong base , also in the district, the disappearance of the deceased.
He added that during their search, they would have been informed of an alleged shallow grave at Ayiwata-Domekpoe, where they finally found the deceased's cell phone and two empty cartons of AA cartridges, thus reinforcing their fears and, therefore, reported to the police.
According to him, the deceased was single and arrived in the area with his father from Tamale, in the Northern Region, a few years ago, while they both moved to Agortive, near Ayiwata-Domekope, to take care of their livestock.
Alhaji Hogo said that at the beginning of April, the deceased had left the house with the cattle but had not managed to return, while the animals were found the next day.
According to him, it is the second time in recent years that the body of another Fulani was found in the bush, shot and wounded, but no suspects were apprehended.
He added that the population of the region was under the grip of fear, but that he hoped that the authorities would successfully investigate this case in order to bring those responsible to justice.
Mr. Joshua Semanyo, Deputy Police Superintendent (DSP), Juapong District Head, confirmed that he received the report last Friday, but he had to proceed with proper documentation prior to the exhumation of the body.
He said that thorough investigations would be undertaken to get to the bottom of things.
Mr. Richard Collins Arku, District Director of North Tongu (DCE), for his part described the case as worrying and wondering what could have been the motive of its perpetrators.
He added that since then he has taken steps to meet the chiefs and Fulanis on this matter.
"I encouraged the police to speed up investigations to bring out those responsible," he said.
The body has since been transferred to the police hospital morgue in Accra for autopsy.
