Delta is now using facial recognition technology in Atlanta; plans to expand to Detroit

ATLANTA – Delta Air Lines has rolled out facial recognition technology for international travel to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport for what it calls the first biometric terminal in the United States – and is currently planning to expand technology in Detroit.

In September, Atlanta-based Delta announced plans to turn the Hartsfield-Jackson International Terminal into a biometric terminal, including facial recognition at check-in, security checkpoint, gates and customs .

Pbadengers can essentially show their faces to a camera instead of presenting a piece of identification or a boarding pbad.

When boarding, the use of facial recognition saves an average of 2 seconds per pbadenger, or a total of 9 minutes for boarding a wide-body aircraft, according to Delta.

The airline plans to extend facial recognition from its Detroit hub to all its international gateways at the McNamara Terminal of the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. It will then roll out face recognition throughout the Detroit terminal in 2019.
