Although democracy has been equated with Africa's development, many are still convinced that it is not an antidote to the many problems plaguing the continent.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Mathew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, who shares this opinion in an interview with Kyenkyenhene Boateng 21 minutes with KKB under the control of MyNewsGh.com, described the experience as "important trip".
"Democracy is not a destination, it is a journey and it is very important. No country can claim that I arrived at the end of the journey. We are all making progress … it's the first thing, "he said.
According to him, democracy, which is not an end in itself, must benefit the citizens, which makes them be measured against their expectations of democracy.
"Democracy is not the end in itself, it is the benefit to citizens, that is what is democracy. Even the simple definition of government by the people for the people is very important. Nowadays, we are talking about the dividends of democracy for the people, "he said.
He described democracy as a complete failure if it failed in its efforts, recalling that what is essential is what it can offer citizens to improve their well-being.
"If democracy can not deliver, then democracy can not deliver, democracy is a failure. The essence of democracy is what it can offer citizens, "he added.
He noted, however, that Africa is still a long way from democracy, but has had some success in conducting general and other elections.
"Thirty years ago, holding elections in any county was a miracle," he said.
