The second debate will also take place in Detroit
While the Democratic presidential candidates are preparing to face it during a second night of debate, all eyes are on former vice president Joe Biden, the party's favorite.
He will share a scene in Detroit with nine other Democrats, including California Senator Kamala Harris.
In their previous debate in June, Ms. Harris had aggressively attacked Mr. Biden's race relations record.
Mr. Biden vowed to defend himself: "I will not be so polite this time."
The winner of the Democratic nomination for the presidency will be announced next July at the party congress.
The presidential election will take place a few months later, in November 2020.
What to watch
The focus will be on Mr. Biden, with polls showing him in the top of the Democrats. He is considered the moderate centrist of his party, with the best chance of wooing voters who supported Republican Donald Trump in the 2016 elections.
But last month, he had a tough night in the Miami debate. Ms. Harris attacked her for her past opposition to school desegregation through the compulsory bus in the 1970s.

After the debate, he saw a dip in the polls as Mrs. Harris stood up and he was looking to regain his momentum.

For many candidates, this could be the last opportunity to make their case to a national audience before the next debate in September, in which only 10 candidates will be allowed to go on stage.
Candidates will be pleased to see an increase in support and fundraising figures after the show in prime time.
Biden in the line of sight again?
The June exchange between Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris was a one-sided affair, as he seemed caught off guard by his critics, who had resulted in the fact that she had been directly a beneficiary of the efforts that the senator Biden then opposed.
The meeting crystallized the consensus that the former vice president had had an uneven debate and had allowed Ms. Harris to stand out noticeably in polls (accompanied by a Biden plunge).

What happened during the first debate?
In Tuesday's debate, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren – who represent the left-most wing of their party – defended their progressive policies against centrists.
Several candidates have described progressive Senators' policies – on issues such as health care and university tuition – as unrealistic and not the best way for the party to overthrow President Trump.

Politicians disagreed on whether to keep border crossings illegal and whether reparations were to be paid to black Americans for the crime of slavery.
But the 10 candidates largely agreed on armed violence, black money in politics and the need to tackle climate change as a matter of urgency.

What was the reaction?
Trump was quick to criticize the entire Democratic realm, saying that without his victory in 2016, the United States would be in economic recession.
"The people I saw on stage last night, and you can add Sleepy Joe, Harris, and the rest, will lead us into an unprecedented economic chasm," he tweeted. "With me, only in place!"
CNN has been criticized for the very stylish format of the debate.
It took almost 25 minutes for the first questions to be asked, after CNN aired big-budget trailers, paused for a commercial break, and delivered lengthy opening statements.
