Suarez has a cape for Spain

Arsenal is about to complete the signing of Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez.

The 25-year-old Spaniard will join the Gunners on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy in the summer.

Suarez has played 71 times for Barcelona since joining in 2013, but has only appeared eight times this season.

Previously, he played under the orders of the Gunners' manager, Unai Emery, at a loan in Seville, while Emery was leading the La Liga team.

Arsenal had targeted Suarez throughout the January transfer period, but its pursuit was complicated by the fact that the agreement only wanted to include the call option and that Barcelona demanded that it be an obligation.

Reports in Spain suggest that Suarez had agreed, as a compromise, to extend its current contract – expiring in June 2020 – in order to protect its value for Barcelona and encourage it to allow it to settle at the Emirates Stadium.

He will not be attending Cardiff City's Premier League visit on Tuesday.

As a teenager, Suarez spent two seasons in Manchester City, but he only made two first team appearances before being sold to Barcelona at age 19.

The Gunners are still in talks to sign a wide player. The Croatian international Ivan Perisic (Croatia) is one of the options considered. Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco of Chinese club Dalian Yifang is another tied player.

Despite a number of injuries, Arsenal should not strengthen their defense.

Captain Laurent Koscielny may well be back in time for Sunday's trip to Manchester City, while Sokratis Papadopoulos – who, like Koscielny, was forced to leave Manchester United on Friday in defeat – should not be away long.
