The New Mexico Department of Health reported a case of plague in a Quay County ranch dog.
This is the first case of plague in the state this year.
Authorities say the dog has recovered with the treatment of his vet.
Plague is an infectious disease of animals and humans caused by a bacterium usually transmitted by the bite of an infected flea.
Pets can also be exposed after eating an infected animal after having hunted or recovered.
Humans can contract the plague through direct contact with infected animal tissues, including rodents, wild animals, and pets.
Last year, there were no cases of human plague in New Mexico and four in 2017. All survived the disease.
Last year, there were three cases of animal plague and 28 in 2017.
