Greene calls on Republicans voting with Democrats to withdraw his committee appointments as anti-free speech.
Besieged Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene apologized for her past comments, but focused on Democratic opponents at a press conference on Friday after being stripped of her committee appointments the night before.
“Freedom of speech matters,” Greene told reporters gathered outside the US Capitol. “Yesterday, when the Democrats and 11 of my fellow Republicans” took her off committees, they “deprived my constituents of representation to work for them on the budget.”
The House voted 230 to 199 to remove Greene from the budget and education committees after growing evidence of his support for a range of unfounded conspiracy theories, including a “QAnon” that argues that Democrats elite are part of a cabal of Satan-worshiping and cannibalistic pedophiles, and that the school shootings were “false flag” events intended to promote increased gun control, among other things.
The beleaguered representative told the story of a classmate bringing weapons to her school, which she described as a “gun-free school zone” created by President Joe Biden during his career in the Senate, so that she was a teenager.
“It’s terrifying… when there isn’t a good guy with a gun to protect us,” she said, echoing Republican comments about allowing guns inside. schools to protect themselves from fire.
The incident was the September 1990 standoff at South Forsyth County High School, which saw two classrooms held hostage by an armed student.
Greene also mentioned the deadlock in the House on Thursday before she was removed from her committee duties.
A spokesperson for Forsyth County Schools told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the besieged lawmaker was not known to have been present “in either class.”
Biden authored the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990, but it did not come into force until November 29, 1990, after Forsyth’s standoff.
A social media account linked to Greene “liked” posts calling for the execution of House of Commons Speaker Nancy Pelosi for treason.

Greene did not apologize for his comments in the House ahead of the vote, marking a change of tone.
Greene, who is also accused of saying Jewish space lasers started the California wildfires, debunked her conspiracy beliefs on Thursday: “In 2018, when I started finding misinformation, lies, things that weren’t true in those posts from QAnon, I stopped believing it. “
The press conference also featured Greene insulting “tyrannical” democratic governance, including accusations of “communism” against progressive lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Biden’s use of executive orders.
Greene said being removed from her appointments would give her time to speak with her constituents, who continue to support her and former President Donald Trump.
