NEW YORK: Does the red velvet cheesecake, french fries or fish fries attract you but you refrain from eating them because of their high calorie count? Take the heart.

According to a new research, choosing these high calorie options first could help you choose a healthier meal later.

The study showed that choosing an indulgent dessert first could lead to less caloric meals.

"We are convinced that the customers who first chose the gourmet dessert then chose main dishes and healthier side dishes to make up for their high-calorie dessert.

"Customers who chose the healthier dessert may have thought that they had already done a good action for their body, so they deserved high-calorie foods further into the cafeteria," said Martin Reimann, Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona in the United States.

The experiment was conducted in the cafeteria of the EGADE Business School of Tecnológico de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico.

For the study, the researchers included 134 people aged 18 to 60 and an average age of 32 years.

They placed a healthy or less healthy dessert (fresh fruit and lemon cheesecake).

There were also healthy and less healthy main and side dishes including grilled chicken fajitas and a small salad or fried fish and fries.

The results, published by the American Psychological Association, showed that customers who chose cheesecake first were twice as likely to order the lighter main course later and ultimately consumed fewer calories than those who chose fresh fruits first.

"People need to be aware that their initial food choices and state of mind can affect the health of their meals," Reimann suggested.
