I have been traveling to Detroit from the New York and Los Angeles area since the early 2000s. I flew from several airports but still flew to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport , Wayne County, or DTW, as it is called among frequent flyers and geeks of the aviation code.

I entered and exited DTW in good weather in the middle of the brutal Midwest winters. I had an unobstructed view of downtown Detroit on the banks of the Detroit River and waited patiently while the DTW de-icer experts did their work. I arrived before dawn and left after midnight.

In all these occasions, I am really looking forward to spending time at the airport. The Detroit Metro has luxury lounges, but I have not frequented them. I dragged in the lobby, bought, ate and drank a drink or two. For the everyday traveler, DTW is not the most opulent airport, but it's a nice place to spend a few hours.
