German telecommunications provider Deutsche Telekom (DT) and Germany-based software provider Software AG have announced a new partnership to develop their joint IoT platform efforts. Companies seek to expand beyond Germany and offer global IoT services to compete with the needs of enterprise IoT platforms.
Here's what companies do: The partners plan to pool their resources to develop solutions that leverage the Cloud of Things product from T-Systems, a DT subsidiary, in conjunction with Software AG's Cumulosity IoT platform.
Cloud of Things is an integrated IoT platform that enables organizations to manage systems that control critical applications. With a single system and interface, organizations can view connected devices in their device infrastructure, view observations and data flows from devices, and control devices or set rules to manage their behavior.
With the integration of the AG Software platform, however, Cloud of Things will work in a multi-cloud environment, which will allow scaling up faster. This will enable customers to move quickly from pilot to production and begin to quickly realize the benefits that their sensors and connected systems can provide.
The largest image: DT's renewed efforts in the IoT platform market are similar to those of telecom companies, including Verizon, Vodafone and Sprint.
Telecommunications companies are looking for ways to leverage their connectivity expertise and solutions to disrupt the IoT platform market. Million Insights estimates that the market for connected industrial and manufactured services will reach $ 1 trillion by 2025 in a number of vertical sectors that are waiting to be exploited. Telecoms typically follow one of two approaches to accessing the IoT platform space, although some companies adopt them in different areas:
- Forge partnerships with platform providers. The collaboration between DT and Software AG, Vodafone Business and IBM, are examples. These partnerships generally allow companies to strengthen the products they already offer by integrating specialized tools and services that they may not be able to offer. Together, the two companies are able to bring a more attractive product to the market, although telecommunications may lose revenue because it has to share with the other party.
- Develop or acquire a complete solution. Verizon Connect, the telecom fleet management product of the internal development efforts and acquisitions of Telogis and Fleetmatics in 2016, is an example of this approach to the IoT market. Although a development or acquisition is probably an additional resource intensive move for telecommunications, it can retain all the revenue from the solution.
Business Insider Intelligence has spoken with Chris Penrose, president of IoT solutions at AT & T, about how his group is addressing the issue of expansion and straddling the border between the two paths of access at the market.
