Former President Flt Jerry John Rawlings participating in the tree planting exercise
Former President Jerry John Rawlings called on Ghanaians to develop a national character for good sustainable governance.
He said that Saturday when he planted the first tree along the island separating the road between the Ghana Standards Board traffic lights and the Legon traffic lights.
The exercise was organized jointly with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the Ministry of Parks and Gardens and the Forestry Commission.
The goal was to celebrate the environmental credentials of Jerry John Rawlings.
Rawlings urged Ghanaians to include the theme of celebrations – Developing a national character for good sustainable governance – in their hearts.
"As we commemorate this historic event, with a tree planting exercise, I sincerely pray that the theme of this event is also planted in our hearts," said the former president.
Among the participants in the exercise were Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, president of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Zoomlion President Joseph Siaw Agyepong; Wa Central MP Rashid Pelpuo; former Minister of State, Samuel Nuamah Donkor.
Mgr Clive Mold of the Chapel of Action, former NDC Deputy Secretary General, Koku Anyidoho, the president of NDC Greater Accra, Ade Coker, and former MP Amadu Sorogho.
The series of indiscriminate tree felling without resorting to the planting of new trees has disastrous consequences on the climate. The exercise was organized to encourage Ghanaians to reintegrate tree planting as a way of life and to mitigate the effects of climate change and a cooler environment.
Rawlings then traveled to Ho, in the Volta region, to attend the funeral of former Steve Akorli, former NDC Minister of Roads and Transportation.
