The newspaper said 14,000 phone service packs were affected by the recall and anyone who had received and installed one since March 22 should unplug it immediately.
Tessa Tierney, Director of Spark Products, said a customer had recently reported that her power supply was overheated and had begun to emit smoke.
"We immediately recovered the device at the customer's premises and submitted it for testing.
"These tests actually showed us that there was a wiring fault in the unit, making it overheated."
Ms. Tierney said that after testing a random sample of other devices and discovered other inconsistencies of different cabling but also, she had decided to recall a product.
She said that this problem was not a design flaw, but rather a manufacturing problem that, according to her, was isolated to a single batch of appliances from China.
"We badure the public that they run no immediate risk, but we ask them … to remove this backup device."
Tierney said Spark would proactively contact all customers with the device in the coming days about the recall.
The company has released a step-by-step guide on how to remove it, including a guide containing video instructions.
Guests are invited either to bring backup power to the nearest Spark store, or to contact Spark directly to arrange collection.
Otherwise, appliances should be stored in a cool, dry, ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or water.
Ms. Tierney stated that customers would receive a credit on their account for the recall.
