DHB asks indisposed visitors to stay away from hospitals

The residents of Northland are asking visitors to stay away from Whangārei's hospital if they do not feel well to stem the spread of measles.

There are now nine confirmed cases of infection in Northland, with three new cases this week and one in intensive care.

The new cases are 25 to 58 years old and none have been vaccinated.

Medical Officer of Health Catherine Jackson stated that the search for contacts revealed that people had gone to the hospital without realizing that they were contagious.

She explained that the first symptoms of measles before the onset of rash resemble those of the flu: fever, cough, runny nose and sore eyes.

Dr. Jackson said that measles had indeed arrived in the north and that all members of the community had to be vigilant.

Following the latest cases, another 30 people and their relatives were isolated to limit the spread of the virus.

Dr. Jackson stated that people who did not feel well at Accident and that emergencies were now given a mask.

The DHB also called on people not to visit their family or friends at the hospital before feeling better.
