Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC's parent company, Diageo, co-founded the Africa Plastics Recycling Alliance to collaborate on plastics recycling and reprocessing in sub-Saharan Africa.

The alliance has the explicit intention of focusing on the economic opportunities it presents, according to a statement issued by Guinness Ghana Breweries.

Diageo works in partnership with other multinationals in the consumer goods sector, including: Unilever, The Coca Cola Company, Promisador and Nestlé to launch the Africa Plastics Recycling Alliance.

The launch took place on Monday, March 25 in Kigali, Rwanda, at the CEO Africa Forum.

The alliance aims to turn the current plastics waste challenge in sub-Saharan Africa into jobs and business by improving the collection and recycling of plastics.

Companies will facilitate and badist their local subsidiaries to proactively engage in public-private partnerships, collaborations and market alliances.

They will share knowledge, encourage innovation, collaborate on finding technical and other solutions for sub-Saharan Africa, and participate in local pilot initiatives.

In the markets in which they operate, companies will also engage with the investment community, policy creators and others to accelerate the development and financing of the necessary infrastructure and waste management systems.

"Plastics will remain an important packaging material if we want to give African consumers the safe and affordable products they need. However, we must ensure that the packaging used ends up in the right place. Unfortunately, the lack of collection and recycling capacity in many African markets, coupled with population growth, is creating a growing problem of plastic waste. We see an opportunity to solve this problem in order to create jobs and reduce dependence on imported materials as alternatives to plastics are developed. Collaboration within and across markets is the key to success, and today we are proud to launch the Alliance for Plastic Recycling in Africa to intensify these efforts and to play our part. role as companies in finding effective solutions for Africa, "said the Alliance.
