Didier Drogba believes that Frank Lampard would be an excellent choice to succeed Maurizio Sarri as Chelsea's next manager, with the Italian on the verge of joining Juventus.

The Serie A champions are expected to announce the arrival of Sarri in the coming days after agreeing a compensation program with Chelsea worth around £ 5 million.

Chelsea has been badociated with a host of names to succeed Sarri, although the Blues legend and current Derby County boss, Lampard, are clearly the favorites.

And although he had only one leadership season under his belt – in which he lost the Aston Villa final – Drogba said Lampard was a strong contender.

"I think it's a very good option for the club," Ivorian legend told reporters as he prepared to play in Soccer Aid. "He played well with Derby, coaching the team in the final."

Drogba continued, "Then he will never be ready, then? Should he wait until he is 50 to be ready?

"I think it depends on your experience and your desire to succeed and do it. If he feels ready, I do not think it's too early. "

Michael Essien, who will also play the Soccer Aid match at Stamford Bridge, was also questioned about Lampard taking over at Chelsea. He replied, "Why not? Anything can happen – football is full of surprises.

"If he comes, it's great because he knows the club and everyone around him, so he would do a good job."
