Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone signed a new contract linking him to the club until 2022, putting an end to rumors calling him a potential successor to Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea.

The Argentinian, who has been regularly badociated with several Premier League clubs over the years, has been in charge of Atletico since 2011, having already played for the Rojiblancos earlier in his career.

Under Simeone, Atletico has established itself as one of the dominant teams in Spain and Europe, winning twice the Europa League and La Liga in 2014.

According to reports reported in Spain, Simeone's new agreement earns it a pay equity with Antoine Griezmann, the main player of the club, worth around € 150,000 per week.

The future of Sarri in Chelsea remains largely in the spotlight after the Italian admitted that he was struggling to motivate his players following their 6-0 loss to the Manchester City champions.

The Blues have also been badociated with Zinedine Zidane – Simeone's longtime rival to Real Madrid before the Frenchman left last summer – but it seems that Chelsea fans are also against this nomination.

Sarri, meanwhile, hopes the Blues will regain their victories – and relieve some of the pressure on his shoulders – with a win over Malmo in The first leg of their round of 16 in the Europa League will be played on Thursday night.
