Instead of focusing on the testimonies of the victims, the film is composed of a series of interviews with scholars and activists from Japan, South Korea and abroad, compiled over three years.
After the dispute on both sides, the film reveals the negative side of Japanese neo-nationalists … who sometimes throw personal insults against the victims.
Dezaki, who taught for five years in Japan, became curious as to why Japanese neo-nationalists wanted to whitewash the history of their country.
It was at that time that he heard about Takashi Uemura, … a former journalist from Asahi Shimbun who received serious criticism for an article he wrote. on the subject.
"I felt very connected to her story because my videos about racism in Japan had hit me, so I was curious to know why they wanted to erase this story of women's comfort issue and how they wanted to erase my video. "
Launched as a graduate project, the film was invited to the Busan International Film Festival last year … and won the international star.

He explains … that knowing the context of the comfort women issue is the key to finding a solution for both Japanese and Korean women and hopes that his film will provide a good introduction to the complex issue.
The film will be released in Korean theaters on July 25, but it has already been screened in Japan since April for surprisingly positive reviews by the public … even though Japanese neo-nationalists were not happy with their interviews in the film and even sued the director. .
"People who did not know the problem at all say that they really appreciate the fact that the film was shot and that they can understand this problem on a deeper level, so the reception was really good. in Japan, it's a good thing because otherwise, if people do not talk about it, people do not know it and there is no way that the situation will change. With regard to the recent trade sanctions adopted by the Abe government (…) to protest the problem of forced labor, the director expressed his deep regret.
He said the issue of human rights should not be treated in this way, at least not in the way the Japanese government is currently showing.
However, as the Director hopes, a constructive discussion already seems to be taking place.
The University of Tokyo invited Seoul students to watch the film together and discuss it in August.
The director will also tour US universities in September and October to present the film to a wider audience.
