Minister of Public Works and Housing Samuel Atta Akyea
The Minister of Public Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea, said that relentlessly defusing Odaw drains without changing attitudes in garbage treatment is a "useless" exercise.
"One of the most painful things I've seen as a minister is this useless exercise called" de-inking, "Atta Akyea told Ibrahim Alhbadan of Starr News on Thursday.
"We have open drains in Ghana, which I say is obsolete. The whole world every stain goes underground. They say the drains must be underground so they do not see dirt.
"But we have open gutters. Whatever you hate at home, you throw it in the open sewers, then choke. When the sewers collapse, they do not allow the free flow of wastewater and that is what flows and we witness all the floods.
"So, if you approach the issue from a very … very technical angle, the cause of the big floods in this country are the attitudes. What do you mean? We take what is dirty at home and we throw it into the open sewers, they are choked when we have a heavy downpour in place of the sewage chambers receiving water in the designated areas where they overflow and that we are flooded, "he added. .
Atta Akyea's comments came a few days after Tamale North MP Alhbadan Suhuyini said, "We are all guilty" of repeated flooding of parts of the capital, Accra, every time it rained.
The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) said three people died during the latest flood in the capital Wednesday (May 29th) after a heavy downpour in the capital.
Heavy rains have caused flooding in several areas of Accra, including the flooded areas of the capital, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Odawna and Dome.
"We all have a role to play in controlling these floods. Leadership has a role to play in the fight against floods and we are all part of it, "Suhuyini told Morning Starr host Francis Abban on Friday.
Meanwhile, dredging and transportation operations in Odaw Channel and Korle Lagoon began in April 2019. According to the company in charge, Dredge Masters, more than one million cubic meters of waste from the river Odaw and the Korle Lagoon had already been drawn.
"The work we've done so far has helped reduce the floods we've seen in Circle recently. In fact, our work has drastically reduced the floods in the area of the circle, "said Sena Adiepena, operations manager at Dredge Masters in Abban at Morning Starr last Friday.
In June 2016, a two-year contract was awarded to Dredge Masters Limited for the remediation and dredging of the Odaw Channel and the restoration of the Korle Lagoon to avoid perpetual floods in Accra.
The scope of work also includes the redesign and construction of the KLERP interceptor and the breakwater at the outlet. The channel located in the field of application runs from the confluence Odaw Onyasia to Carprice in Accra, pbading through Avenor, the Kwame Nkrumah interchange and the Agbogbloshie-South Kaneshie drain (upper and lower lagoon).
