Ghana Water Company Limited's northern regional office has attributed water supply interruptions to what it describes as disruptions in its facilities.
For a few weeks now, residents of Savelugu and Nanton have often been forced to travel long distances in search of water.
GWCL's Northern Public Relations Officer, Nicholas Nii Abbey, told Citi News that the modification of their facilities by strangers had resulted in a drop in production.
"We have a lot of people altering our facilities. We set up our facility to carry out our operation and, because people manipulate them, we have a hard time achieving our goal, "he said.
This follows the Northern Office's badertion that a debt of 51 million Cedis to its customers, particularly government institutions, is seriously affecting its operations.
The company said some state institutions owed it millions of cedis for the water supply.
He said that these financial constraints are largely responsible for the irregular water supply in some parts of the region.
The company's public relations officer, Nicholas Nii Abbey, said defaulters should settle their debts to keep the company afloat.
"If you look at the debt of clients in the North, as of February 11, 2019, the debt level had risen to 51.6 million GHc. That's what they owe us. When you translate this into number of months, so it is 12 months in a row that consumers have taken water without pay … If we all have these funds frozen, how are we going to invest? "
