The DMX rapper was rushed to hospital on Friday and remained unresponsive on Sunday.

Nakia Walker, his former manager, told BuzzFeed News on Sunday that the rapper, born Earl Simmons, is in a “vegetative state” with “lung and brain failure.” She said she had just spoken with her family.

His agent and other representatives did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News calls and emails, but his longtime lawyer told NBC the rapper had a heart attack on Friday night and was taken to a White Plains Hospital, New York. Simmons had to be resuscitated and was placed on life support in the intensive care unit, NBC reported.

TMZ first reported that the 50-year-old man was rushed to hospital after an overdose of the drug.

When reached by phone on Sunday, Walker told BuzzFeed News the rapper had been “in the same condition” all weekend and that she and her family were “praying and awaiting” his recovery.

“He’s still in the same state – in a vegetative state, [with] lung and brain failure and no brain activity, “she said.” We just pray and wait. Pray and wait.

Walker described Simmons as a fighter. The couple have become close friends after starting their working relationship over 12 years ago, she said.

“We’re just keeping our hopes up. It’s devastating, for sure… it’s really difficult,” she said.

Walker encouraged fans to keep their hopes up at this time. “Keep the energy positive, keep praying for X, keep playing his music, stay encouraged,” she added.

Simmons has struggled publicly with drug addiction and has been jailed on drug charges in the past.

In 2019, he enrolled in rehab after spending a year in prison for tax evasion.

Following the news of his hospitalization, celebrities such as Viola Davis, SZA and Chance the Rapper have said they are praying for his recovery.
