Do not drive unhealthy food joints – TMA

Tema, June 6, GNA – Food Consumers in the
Tema Metropolis was reminded to be wary of unhygienic food joints
avoid communicable diseases, especially during this rainy season.

Mr. Frank Asante, Public Relations Officer,
Metropolitan Assembly of Tema (TMA), in an interview with the Ghana News Agency,
Consumers need to be aware of what they consume during the rainy season
with unsanitary conditions have often served as a catalyst for triggering food
related diseases, including cholera, typhoid and dysentery.

Mr. Asante called residents to
monitor these foods and report back to the Assembly for further action
to be taken to save lives.

He noted that the TMA was taking
through its public health department to strictly enforce public health regulations
preparation.

Compliment the efforts of the Assembly in
voluntary information that could help public health officials to understand
people preparing and selling food in unsanitary conditions and without
necessary screening, he said.

The PRO stated that the Assembly had ensured
that food handlers and salespeople hit by officials went through medical
exams and have been duly certified before handling food for the public
consumption.

He revealed that during the first quarter
In 2019, his team screened 673 food vendors, including 625
newcomers, while 48 people have renewed their certification to handle food in
Metropolis.

He noted, however, that they were unable to
reach their goal of 1000 for the first quarter to be educated on hygiene
handling of food as well as to undergo the necessary medical screening.

Address other problems related to hygiene,
revealed that a total of 47 subpoenas had been served on
of which 42 were presented for prosecution of which 20 were successfully
Prosecution resulting in a total fine of 6,800 GH.

Mr. Asante indicated that 10 of the cases
were still waiting, while four people were arrested on six arrest warrants
issued against the sanitarians who did not appear in court.

He added that a total of 711 local people had been
inspected during the sanitation nuisance detection period during
of which 44 were served on unhealthy conditions, 32 of those served
respected while 12 reviews were still pending.

The TMA PRO observed that to ensure
the cleanliness of the 18 fleets of trucks and the eight markets of the metropolis, every day
cleaning was carried out by "scavengers" distributed by his outfit
in these places.

He however agreed that there was
incoherent collection of garbage by service providers, resulting in an accumulation of
the Tema Community One market transfer station which promises to remedy this situation
occurrences.

Another setback in the daily cleaning was
overcrowding of markets and inadequate collection by workers of
Zoom Lion Company after sweeping, he says.
