SAN ANTONIO – "Do not ruin your kidneys" A new initiative aims to test kidney disease in San Antonio.

The South Texas Renal Care Group, the Texas Kidney Foundation and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to fight the silent health crisis.

Dr. Reza Mizani is the founder of the South Texas Renal Care Group. He has recently seen several patients with advanced renal failure. He said then, it's too late. They only have two options: dialysis or a kidney transplant.

"We have to do something in our community," he said. "So we can educate people about chronic kidney disease or kidney disease in general. The first cause of kidney failure is diabetes. The second cause is hypertension."

According to officials, 14.2% of the population of Bexar County has diabetes, compared to only 7.2% nationwide. However, these numbers do not include those who are not diagnosed.

"If a member of your family has kidney disease, chances are you have a much higher risk of developing kidney disease," he said. "Again, a silent disease with no idea what will happen."

Dr. Mizani wants people to be aware and especially to get tested, which is a simple process.

"It's mainly a simple urine test," he said. "There may be blood, but it's mostly a urine test – it's very easy, fast and simple."

This new initiative even encourages people to make free screenings offered by the Texas Kidney Foundation. If you want to program one, click here.

"Do not make fun of your kidneys because kidney disease does not mess with you," said Dr. Mizani.
