Psst. You want a cheap iPad without going to Hong Kong? Well, I have an agreement for you – do not look too closely. This range probably would not sell too many fake iPads in China, but imitations of Apple tablets have been spotted in this country for as little as $ 110.
According to the Wall Street newspaper, a Beijing market known for selling counterfeit tourist products of well-known brands has turned its attention to the iPad. Labeled "iPads" and sporting the Apple logo, the imitated products are a mix of Frankenstein monsters resembling that of Cupertino, California and Google Innards.
Although the devices superficially present the well-known design qualities of Apple, the units actually use the Android operating system. And, here, the word "run" should probably be more precisely "crawl". According to the WSJ report, the units have 64 GB of memory, but probably contain less. The touch screen is described as "not responding" and switching from the screen to a new page can be an adventure.
In addition to China's well-known penchant for not simulating all popular products, the country's street vendors offer high-quality iPads. The device is already available in Hong Kong and Apple's Chinese partner, China Unicom, is expected to sell the iPad (and iPhone 4) later this year.
