A new study published in the journal Cell Metabolism revealed that people eat and weigh more than they consume ultra-processed foods.

A trial conducted by the US National Institutes of Health and involving 20 adults monitored their caloric intake for 28 days, divided into two periods, based on an ultra-transformed or transformed diet.

During the trial, participants were asked to eat as much or as little as they wanted. The results showed that people ate more when they used an ultra-processed diet, resulting in 500 extra calories a day. Participants also took 0.9 kg in two weeks of ultra-processed food consumption and lost 0.7 kg in two weeks of unprocessed food consumption.

The type of food could influence a hunger suppressing hormone called PYY. When participants followed an ultra-processed diet, they had a lower rate of this hormone and a higher rate of hunger hormone, hence their desire to eat more.

The result suggests that obesity could be blamed on modern diets of ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed foods have a broad definition, but the term generally refers to foods that have been processed, often more than once, and contains additives and industrial sources of dietary energy and nutrients.

Usually, ultra-processed foods are cheaper, more convenient and have a longer shelf life, hence their popularity. (dev / kes)
