The presiding judge in The Republic v. Eric Kojo Duah and Michael Osafo Eni case detained for the murder of two police officers in Kasoa, Judge El-Freda Denkyi ordered journalists not to write or record during the hearing on Thursday July 15, 2021.

The court, after being informed of the media presence in court by the clerk, said: “I learned that there were journalists here for this case from GHOne, Daily Guide, TV3 and GBC. Where are they? Please you can observe but not record. Don’t write anything.

On the merits, the court chaired by Judge El-Freda Dankyi said the court had “administrative problems” in obtaining the jurors.

Kojo Duah (A1) was charged with the murder of two policemen – Deputy General Mohammed Awal and Deputy Michael Dzamesi on the Kasoa-Budumburam-Accra section in August 2019.

Michael Osafo Eni, however, faces the accusation of complicity. They all pleaded not guilty.

The case has been adjourned until July 28, 2021 for the accused to reappear.

Before adjourning the case, the lawyer for the first defendant (Kojo Duah), Augustines Obour, asked the court to admit his client on bail.

According to him, his client who has been in police custody since his arrest in 2019 feels discriminated against, considering that others in similar situations have been admitted on bail.

EIB Network judicial correspondent Murtala Inusah reports that this is the fourth time that the case has to be adjourned due to the unavailability of jurors.

The criminal division of the High Court of Accra had, in three previous hearings, on July 1, May 2 and June 16, deplored that jurors were recruited to begin the trial.

Eric Kojo Duah has been formally charged with two counts of murder.

Last year, the GA advised police to formally charge Eric Kojo Duah, who allegedly shot dead two officers on the Kasoa-Budumburam-Aprah stretch in August 2019, with murder.

At the district court chaired by Rosemond Dodua Agyiri, the prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Sylvester Asare, said the police had received instructions from the prosecution to formally charge Duah alias Sakora with murder.

He allegedly shot and killed Lance Corporal Mohammed Awal and Lance Corporal Michael Dzamesi in turn who were on duty on the Kasoa-Budumburam-Aprah road on August 28 of this year.

Police apparently asked Eric Duah, who was driving an unregistered vehicle, to stop, but he ignored them.

Officers with a service vehicle chased after him, and Duah pulled a pistol out of his car and took turns firing at the officers.

While Awal died instantly, Dzamesi died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The accused has since been placed in lawful detention.
