Borussia Dortmund suffered a serious setback in the Bundesliga title following their 4-2 home defeat by Schalke 04 in the Ruhr derby on Saturday, just one point behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Dortmund, whose two players were expelled, totaled 69 points and three games to play, while Bayern Sunday faces the 70 troubled players of Nuremberg.

The Bavarians will open a four-point lead with a win on Sunday, leaving Dortmund hoping that Bayern could lose twice in the last three games.

Schalke is virtually certain to stay in place after climbing 30 points to 15th, nine more than the relegation match against VfB Stuttgart, who will face Borussia Moenchengladbach later on Saturday.

Daniel Caligiuri's penalty in the 18th minute brought the ball closer to the visitors' center after Mario Goetze's close header from a superb Jadon Sancho cross led to Dortmund's 14th place finish.

Salif Sane's powerful header at Caligiuri in 28th places Schalke's score at 2-1, which is nothing like the team that has struggled to avoid relegation for much of the season.

Disciplined at the back and waiting for his chances at the break, Schalke managed to absorb attack after attack from Dortmund, who held more than 75% possession of the ball in the first half but was clearly missing the pbad.

Things got more complicated after the break with Marco Reus, captain of Dortmund, sent off at the hour with a flawless red card for Suat Serdar.

Caligiuri scored the free kick in the top corner before Dortmund was reduced to nine men. Marius Wolf received his orders in the 65th for another tough challenge at Serdar.

Dortmund gave it all and Axel Witsel reduced the deficit in the 85th minute, but Breel Embolo scored Schalke's fourth goal a minute later to seal a memorable derby win in a disappointing season for the year's finalists last.

The RB Leipzig secured its top four finish and return to the Champions League by beating 2-1 in Freiburg to remain in third place on 64, 10 in front of Eintracht Frankfurt, fourth.
