The Brong-Ahafo Regional Office of the Ghana Police Service's Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) recorded a 15.21% increase in the number of cases.

The regional unit coordinator, Setina Aboagye, Deputy Police Superintendent (DSP), said in an interview at the Ghanaian News Agency in Sunyani that 1,019 cases had been handled in the area. 39 last year against 864 in 2017.

She pointed out that the unreported cases were the most serious (410, domestic violence, 194, death threats, 68, robbery, 43, violence, 20 and non-acceptance of pregnancy, 35).

DSP Aboagye indicated that the Bureau had also dealt with cases of illegal rejection, indecency, indecent badault, bigamy, obscenity, badual harbadment, missing person , baby abandonment, forced marriage and early marriage.

She added that 700 cases had been settled and closed, 86 cases were referred to the Court. Of these, 15 have been acquitted and released, 35 have been sentenced and 37 are awaiting trial.

DSP Aboagye added that 65 cases out of the total number of registered cases had been referred to the Department of Social Welfare, the courts and the Legal Aid Council, while 160 were still under investigation.

She said that 123 victims were men and 904 women, adding that there were 714 men guilty against 71 women.

She advised the general public to report all cases of crime and abuse to DOVVSU to ensure that the rights of victims are not violated.

DSP Aboagye said that the opening of new offices in municipalities and districts in the region had contributed to the increase in the number of cases during the year under review.
