Dozens killed in Nigerian violence outbreak

Dozens of people were killed in an outbreak of violence in three regions of Nigeria, local security officials and sources said Tuesday.

In southeastern Rivers State, eight people were killed early Monday when gunmen attacked Emohua village in the Ogoni region, said local chief Sunny Odum .

State police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni said the attack was a "sect-related incident," a term usually referring to gangs or criminals who are hired for political purposes and often badociate rituals of belief or black magic with their actions.

In the state of Katsina, in the north of the country, 14 people were killed Sunday during clashes between cattle thieves and a civilian militia armed by the government to support the security forces, announced the police.

The fighting took place in Tsamiyar Jino, Kankara region, killing seven people and seven guards, said Katsina police spokesman Gambo Isa.

"The volunteers went into the forest and hired the bandits despite police warnings never to confront them alone … because of the bandits' sophisticated weapons and good knowledge of the terrain," Isa said.

In contrast, the village chief, Jaafaru Bello, told AFP that 36 people had been killed by thieves and that people were afraid to recover the bodies.

Local resident Usman Abdullahi, a resident of Tsamiyar Jino, said that about a hundred militiamen from surrounding villages had stormed the hiding place of the bandits, but that they had been under fire and had were forced to withdraw "in disarray".

Livestock theft is a chronic and often violent problem in the states of Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna and Niger, and thieves are acquiring increasingly sophisticated weapons.

Last week, at least 50 people were killed in Zamfara, the most affected state.

Meanwhile, Nigerian media reported on Tuesday that 20 people were slaughtered in the Kajuru region of Kaduna state in clashes between farmers and nomadic herders.

A spokesman for the state police confirmed the incident, but refused to give any other immediate details.
