The number of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo now exceeds 2,000, according to the Congolese Ministry of Health in its update on Monday.

Fourteen new confirmed cases, half of which in Mabalako, add up to a total of 2,008, including 94 probable cases. 281 other suspected cases are under investigation.

Mabalako also had four more deaths, with a death toll of 174. One quarter of all new cases in the last three weeks occurred in the health zone of North Kivu province, with a total of 1334 deaths.

"The 2,000-case bar was pbaded on Sunday," said the health ministry. "Despite this evolution, the developments of recent weeks are positive although vigilance remains in place."

Among these encouraging signs, there is a decrease in armed attacks against Ebola agents.

"While threats against the response remain high, reducing the number of targeted attacks has allowed teams to catch up with the spread of the epidemic," the ministry said. "However, the security situation remains unstable and unpredictable. With regard to incidents of reluctance or resistance from the community, the majority of these incidents are resolved through the participation of community leaders, sensitizers and psychosocial experts. "

The ministry also noted the spread of Ebola virus disease in the affected areas of North Kivu and Ituri. More than half of the affected areas have now spent more than 21 days without any new cases being reported.

"To date, no case of Ebola has crossed the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the epidemic has not spread to the most risky major urban centers, namely Goma, Bunia and Kisangani", added the ministry. "However, the risk remains high given the significant movement of the population."
