'Dreams' Mazda car rotary engine, but 'no delay'

In an interview with Mazda about his projects, a development concerning the coveted rotary engine was released.

This Automotive News Europe interview, Akira Marumoto, CEO of Mazda, confirmed that the apparent problem of the brand 's emissions target in the European Union was apparent. The company seems to run out of time to reduce its CO2 footprint, its hope resting on the next-generation SkyActiv-X engine Mazda3.

But beyond the problem of emissions, the interview went to the very popular rotary plant.

According to Mr. Marumoto, the company continued to develop the rotary engine even after stopping the RX-8. He of course mentioned the confirmed application of the rotary engine, which will be a range extender for future electric vehicles. Electric vehicles with Wankel range extender are expected to come out this year, although we have yet to hear of any developments on this subject so far.

The next line of Mr. Marumoto was rather interesting, at least for rotary fans. "In Mazda, we all dream of one day seeing a vehicle equipped with a rotary engine.But considering the number of things to do, we had to put that on the back burner, and we have no schedule" , he said.

This is not the first time that Mr. Marumoto confirms that the rotary engine is still current at Mazda. However, it is a little sad to know that this has not yet materialized even until now.

We all know what the rotary engine could do and the wonders it offers in terms of performance. But with this development and with the confirmation that the rotary engine is now on the back burner, all we could do is wait.
