Drinking two liters a day can reduce the risk of depression, says new study

Drinking a few pints a day can help fight the blues, a study found.

People who appreciate a few jars will be pleased to learn that a consumption of up to 14 drinks a week can reduce the risk of depression by 5%.

According to the study, drunk people drank as much as 70%. Meanwhile, heavy consumers have seen the risk of depression increase to 80%, reports The Sun.

Dr. Katalin Gemes, of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, said: "Participating in social gatherings can explain why the risk of depression was lower."

The study ranked moderate consumption up to 14 units of alcohol per week.

As Swedish units have more alcohol than Irish, this equates to roughly 21 units or 10 liters.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health's recommendation is not to drink more than 14 units per week.

But experts believe that moderate alcohol modifies chemicals such as serotonin.

Alcohol can also stimulate healthy bacteria in the intestine, thereby reducing inflammation that can trigger depression.

The study followed 5,000 adults over a decade and took into account previous depression, history of alcohol consumption, income, and age.

Psychologist Cary Lynn Cooper concurred with the findings published in the journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica.

He said, "Going to the pub helps people to relax.

"The problem is how much – too much, it's bad for mental and physical health."
