Drivers could face penalty points if they did not wear seatbelts in the car.

British drivers could be paid penalty points if they did not wear seatbelts. Under current laws, motorists from England, Wales and Scotland may be fined £ 100. However, we do not know how many penalty points have been distributed to drivers. British drivers can lose their driver's license for accumulating 12 penalty points in three years.

The proposed introduction of this rule is part of the government's Road Safety Action Plan, which includes 74 actions to improve road safety.

In 2017, 27% of car fatalities involved people who did not wear a seatbelt – which means that one in four deaths by car could have been prevented by getting caught.

UK Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: "The UK has some of the safest roads in the world, but we are not complacent and continue to look for ways to make them safer.

"Today's action plan is a key step in our road safety work and sets out the important steps we are taking to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

"The Department of Transportation is also studying the report of the Parliamentary Advisory Council on Transportation Safety (PACTS) on the use of the seatbelt.

"This report examines which drivers and pbadengers are least likely to wear a seatbelt, which encourages them to behave and which interventions would best reduce the number of victims."

Road Safety Minister Michael Ellis said, "Too many people do not wear seat belts when traveling by car, unnecessarily putting their lives in danger.

"The imposition of heavier sentences on people who do not respect the simplest way to protect themselves is just one of the many measures taken by the government to keep people safe on our roads."
