Ernesto Kofi Yeboah was arrested on Wednesday for disrupting the parliamentary session
Ernesto Kofi Yeboah, leader of the League of Economic Fighters, was commended for his role in the campaign that forced the parliament to suspend plans for a new chamber.
Three panellists and Joy News's badysis facilitator, Newsfile, agreed that he had "been brave" when he led his group screaming and singing in Parliament, "Drop this room."
This sentence is the traction line of the #DropThatChamber campaign that went viral after Parliament unveiled a model for building a new parliament with conference rooms, a chapel, a mosque and gardens.
A social media movement crystallized in a plan to go to Parliament on July 13 to petition Parliament for its plans.
But about a week before the month of March, a few members of the Economic Fighters League and their leader stormed the parliament platform.
When the case was raised in Parliament, they shouted their opposition. Ernest Yeboah, Abeiku Adams and another were dragged out of Parliament, arrested and charged with offensive conduct.
Professor Ransford Gyampo, a lecturer in political science, said on Newsfile's actions that the actions of members of the Economic Fighters League had impressed him.
He said that Ghanaians tended to "leave everything to God" and that Ernesto's action helped to shake up a "docile" Ghanaian population.
Professor Gyampo, however, expressed his concern, the political activist could break the law to achieve its goals.
Lawyer Ace Ankomah said that Mr. Yeboah, even though he knew the consequences of the violation of public laws, "has accounted for the costs and took his cross".
"He decided that the price to pay was worth the message he had sent. For me it is that "
Ace Ankomah said he noticed that Mr. Yeaboah "had just exploded" after hearing the Asokwa MP, KT Hammond, say that "the deputies can not sit under the trees" .
"I think he was pretty restrained until he heard about this tree," he said.
Samson Lardy Anyenini, host of Newsfile, who represents political activists in court, said that after listening to them explain their actions, he was impressed.
Mr. Anyenini said that Ernesto reflected on his actions and felt that there was a mismatch between the political clbad and the citizens, so that "the only way to listen to them was to to make one's point of view "
"I listen to them and you can say that for them, that's what it takes," he said. The protesters then traced the evolution of the situation due to civil disobedience.
John Jinapor, NDC deputy for the Yapei Kusawgu constituency in the northern region, also added that the actions of the League of Economic Fighters are not wrong.
He added that famous US political activist Rosa Parks had unleashed the dismantling of segregation laws through civilian obedience.
