Dubai News: Major deal with UK university to develop Dubai campus

The University of Birmingham, the British institute ranked among the 100 best in the world, has signed an agreement for the construction of the second phase of its campus in Dubai.

Sir David Eastwood, director and vice-chancellor of the university, and CEO of the TECOM Group, Malek Al Malek, have signed the agreement, which will allow the construction of a new purpose-built campus.

Located in the International Academic City of Dubai, the facilities will open in September 2021 and provide a university home to 2,900 students with the opportunity to expand development as the University of Birmingham develops.

Designed by Hopkins Architects, the buildings will be located across from the city's first purpose-built student housing community.

The 50,000 m² campus is designed to encourage collaboration across academic disciplines, with flexible learning spaces and formal learning spaces to ensure that teaching and research can work in tandem for the benefit of students.

A student center will locate student services in a single space, while other facilities will include a 300-seat amphitheater, an auditorium and three laboratories for 200 students, as well as seminar and tutorial rooms.

Birmingham was the first university of the top 100 and UK Russell Group in the world to establish a campus in Dubai.

The University of Birmingham in Dubai already offers programs in the following areas: business, economics, computer science, mechanical engineering and teacher training. It launches new programs of study for 2019/20 in areas such as accounting, banking and finance, international trade law and teacher training in Arabic and special educational needs.
