The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) said Ghanaians will face intermittent electricity supply until September 2021, when it will complete its system upgrade.
GRIDCo had previously indicated that it was working on a system upgrade to improve service delivery and had announced that it would come with intermittent power supply.
Subsequently, there were power outages in various parts of the country and many wondered if the days of the erratic power supply known as dumsor were back.
But, speaking to the media during an inspection of one of GRIDCo’s sites, Energy Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh called on Ghanaians to support the company as it works in the public interest.
He also rejected suggestions that Ghana has returned to the period of constant power outages commonly known as “dumsor”.
“We should all be honest in our communication. In 2016, they [ NDC government] gave us times when we were on and off. In 2016, the government of the day told us it was a generational problem. It is not a generation problem. It’s not about fuel, so how bad can it be? Dumsor is planned and a schedule is in place, ”the minister said addressing the media during an inspection of one of GRIDCo’s sites. Tuesday April 6, 2021.
He also said that Ghanaians should “support the contractors, so that they finish on time, so that we can enjoy the improvement we want so much. We have systems where the lights are flashing, the voltages are low and the line is cut and that is exactly why we have what we have ”.
Meanwhile, GRIDCO’s director of system operations Michael Baah said upgrading the system would prevent outages like what happened over the weekend.
