SYDNEY: A Dutchman made an epic journey of 95,000 km in an electric car Sunday, April 7 in Sydney, to prove the viability of such vehicles in the fight against climate change.
Wiebe Wakker drove his refurbished break dubbed "The Blue Bandit" in 33 countries, in what he described as the world's longest electric car trip.
The journey from the Netherlands to Australia took a little over three years and was funded by public donations from around the world, including electricity to recharge the Bandit, food and a place to sleep.
Wakker has traveled various countries and environments, including Turkey, Iran, India, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia, the route being determined by the offers received on his site Web.
"I wanted to change people's minds and get them to start driving electrically by showing the benefits of sustainable mobility," Wakker said.
"If a man can drive to the other side of the world by electric car, electric vehicles should absolutely be viable for everyday use."
Wakker said that prior to the modification of the car, she would have used 6,785 liters of gasoline to complete the ride.
The modified vehicle can travel 200 km with a single charge. Wakker said that he had spent only $ 300 on electricity, much of it in the remote desert of the Australian outback.
