The Eastern Regional Office of the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) registered 360 vehicles between January 4 and 13, 2021.
Mr. Sylvanus Markwei, Eastern Regional Director of DVLA, who told the Ghana News Agency in an interview, said that figure included 118 motorcycles, 171 private vehicles and 71 utility vehicles.
He noted that driver’s license applications had decreased compared to previous years, due to the strict measures put in place by the DVLA to review all applications before issuing a license.
The regional chief said the DVLA would not lower the standards of its licensing process, but arrangements had been made to ensure that drivers were able to read and write to enable them to Pass the computer exam, road signs and authorized front traffic test to ensure the safety of all road users.
He urged applicants to use the correct channel to obtain a license rather than relying on middlemen known as ‘Goro boys’ who charge more fees, while providing them with false documents.
On the issue of license plates, he explained that the plate with a white background was for private use, yellow for commercial vehicles and the blue background for motorcycles and strictly not for commercial use.
He added that the law does not allow the use of motorcycles for commercial purposes and warned that anyone who uses a motorcycle with a blue background for commercial activities is breaking the law.
