HBO Game of thrones is known for its long cast list, but only 12 characters have appeared in each season. Based on George RR Martin’s A song of ice and fire novels, the fantasy show debuted in April 2011, spanning eight seasons before ending in May 2019. The series, created by David Benioff and DB Weiss, comprised 73 episodes in total. Strangely enough, none of the actors in Game of thrones has appeared in over 67 episodes, but there were plenty of arcs that were prevalent in all eight episodes.
To follow the foundation put in place by Martin’s epic, Game of thrones presented a great ensemble cast. With a pivotal war unfolding in the fictional nation of Westeros, an array of noble families have been drawn into the conflict surrounding the claim to the Iron Throne. Apart from the dozens and dozens of notable supporting characters and guest stars, the series had an impressive roster of main characters. Among the front and center actors for much of the show were Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Lena Headey. These names, however, only scratch the surface when it comes to the Game of thrones‘distribution list.

Based on the number of characters entered in Game of thrones, some viewers expect the number of regular series to be much higher. Characters like Bran Stark, Davos Seaworth, and Brienne of Tarth were integral to the plot, but this trio didn’t appear every season. With that said, here are all the characters who played a role in all eight seasons.
Jon Snow (Kit Harington)
Jon Snow appeared in a total of 62 episodes over the eight seasons of Game of thrones. Originally introduced as the bastard son of Ned Stark, Jon eventually learned that he was the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. After becoming Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, Jon turned to restore House Stark’s control over the North while preventing an impending war against the White Walkers. Despite Jon’s romantic involvement and loyalty to Daenerys Targaryen, he had no choice but to kill her before taking the Iron Throne in Season 8. Harington survived the events of the series by joining the Night’s Watch when he was sent into exile.
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)
Daenerys Targaryen casually starred in the same number of episodes as her eventual lover / murderer, Jon Snow. As one of the main female figures, Daenerys started out as the Princess of Dragonstone before becoming the mother of dragons and a queen in the eyes of her followers. Her rise to power began after her marriage to Khal Drogo, but her three dragons have greatly helped her conquer several key locations. After lining up with Jon to thwart a takeover by the Night King, Daenerys focused on the Iron Throne. Although she briefly became the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, her death in the series finale came before she could officially sit on the throne.
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage)
Among all the characters featured in Game of thrones, Tyrion Lannister appeared in most episodes, totaling 67 out of 73. Lord Tywin Lannister’s youngest child still disagreed with his family, which continued into adulthood. Although he served his noble house, including his sadistic nephew, Joffrey Baratheon, Tyrion eventually changed his allegiance to aid Daenerys’ efforts. At the end of the series, Tyrion was the last surviving Lannister when he was named the new Lord of Casterly Rock and Hand of the King.
Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey)
Another character present for 62 episodes in total of the epic fantasy series was Cersei Lannister. Although Cersei was billed as one of the show’s greatest villains, the character has suffered a lot of trauma on a personal level. She eventually became the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, but it came after all of her children died. Cersei’s incestuous secret relationship with her twin brother, Jaime, never allowed her to live a fulfilling life. As the secrets caught up with her, her future was already threatened by being Daenerys’ enemy. Cersei starred in Season 8, but she didn’t make it to the series finale due to her death caused by Daenerys’ attack on King’s Landing.
Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)
Like his siblings, Jaime Lannister starred in all eight seasons of Game of thrones, to 55 episodes. The “Kingslayer” was not sadistic like his twin sister / lover, but he was also loyal to House Lannister despite the troubles they caused in Westeros. Interestingly, Jaime helped House Stark on several occasions, including the Battle of Winterfell. In the show’s final season, Jaime attempted to get back to Cersei as Daenerys sought to dethrone the Queen. Jaime and Cersei were killed after being buried in the rubble of destruction caused by Daenerys’ rage-fueled attack on the city.
Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner)
Ned and Catelyn Stark’s oldest daughter arguably had the most compelling arc of all Game of thrones‘ Classes. Sansa Stark started out as a naive idealist who allegedly sold her soul to become a nobleman. After being manipulated by House Lannister while other family members were being killed, Sansa began to recognize the truth. The young woman survived several brutal experiences, but she admirably used her difficulties as motivation to keep moving forward. Shortly after returning to Winterfell and after fighting for her home, Sansa was made Queen of the North.
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams)
While her journey couldn’t have been more different than Sansa’s, Arya Stark has also appeared in 59 episodes across Game of thrones“Eight seasons. Unlike her sister, Arya behaved like a tomboy, which helped her escape the grip of House Lannister. During his tumultuous journey, Arya acquired key allies before training as the Faceless Man. She eventually reunited with part of her family in Winterfell after checking off a few names on her kill list. Arya surprisingly served as the character who killed the Night King. Following the assassination of Westeros, Arya decided to embark on a sailing trip, ending her arc in the series finale.
Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen)
Theon Greyjoy was one of the most complicated characters in Game of thrones based on his unpredictable loyalty throughout the eight seasons. Initially aligned with Robb Stark, Theon betrayed the family to support his father’s invasion of the North. After being hostage to Ramsay Bolton, Theon attempted to redeem himself by saving Sansa from House Bolton. He also tried to make amends with his sister, Yara, before attending the Battle of Winterfell, where he died protecting Bran from the Night King.
Samwell Tarly (John Bradley)
As Jon’s closest friend, Samwell Tarly has appeared in every season of the series. He first made his debut as a Night’s Watch recruit before embarking on the order’s most dangerous missions. Although he often stood by Jon’s side, Sam had his own notable achievements, including starting a family with Gilly and gaining the experience required to become a Grand Maester at the end of the series.
Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen)
Jorah Mormont might not have been a central figure Game of thrones, but the character has appeared every season. In her 52 total episodes, Jorah has primarily served Daenerys. Saving his leader on several occasions, Jorah had given up his role for a brief period when he was infected with grayscale. The man was able to regain Daenerys’ strength before the Battle of Winterfell, which became the site of Jorah’s tragic death.
Bronn (Jérôme Flynn)
Bronn has appeared in a handful of episodes each season of Game of thrones. First billed as a sales sword, Bronn became Tyrion’s personal bodyguard before working more in King’s Landing. Despite ties to House Lannister, Bronn was more of a wild card. Due to his arrangement with Tyrion, Bronn became Lord of Highgarden and Master of the Room when Bran was appointed the new Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.
Lord Varys (Conleth Hill)
Although he was not physically active during the War of the Five Kings, Varys was a key member of the conflict based on his information. While serving as the Master of Whispers in the Small Council of Baratheon, Varys eventually fled King’s Landing, as he was active in the cause against House Lannister. He remained a key supporter of Daenerys, serving her until the attack on King’s Landing. Due to his concerns about Daenerys’ mental health, Varys was executed for treason at Game of thrones‘last season.
