Each of the six regions to be created will receive start-up capital of 20 million GHc if it succeeds in the next referendum scheduled for 27 December 2018.

The Minister of Reorganization and Regional Development, Dan Botwe, said that this amount was intended to enable them to put in place essential infrastructure for a smooth takeoff.

"In anticipation, the budget and economic policy of 2019 provided 20 million GHc seed capital per new region for the establishment of critical infrastructure enabling the new regions to take off. So if they succeed, they will have that one to start settling and taking control of their area, "said Dan Botwe at a press conference on Thursday.

The government is seeking to create six additional regions, namely: Northwest, Oti, Bono East, Ahafo, Savannah and Northeast.

Processes are currently in place to hold a referendum in all six regions.

The Supreme Court paved the way for holding the referendum when it dismissed a lawsuit aimed at hindering the exercise.

The plaintiffs, Mayor Agblexe, Destiny Awlimey and Jean-Claude Koku Amenyaoglo, sought an interpretation of Article 5 of the 1992 Constitution, which sets out the procedure for creating new regions.

But the justice of the Supreme Court declared that there was no real problem of interpretation, as the Constitution unambiguously stipulates, what should be done during the process. of referendum.

Dan Botwe welcomed the ruling of the Supreme Court which said: "The way is now open for the Electoral Commission to hold the referendum".

He added that the constitutional instrument to govern the creation of new regions has fulfilled its mandatory 21 days in Parliament and expires today, November 29, 2018.

"109 will expire by the end of the sitting of Parliament, and therefore the Commission will have the green light to carry out its tasks."

He explained that under the 1992 Constitution, about 50% of registered voters in areas reserved for new regions must take part in the referendum, adding that "80% of voters should vote yes before the creation of the region." . "

"That's not to say that for this reason you automatically have six regions. No. It may be that only one region pbades, it is also possible that all six pbad, "he added.

The government does not spend a penny in the countryside

The minister added that the government did not spend money to campaign for the new regions and left such activities to the petitioners who demanded the creation.

"In our discussions, we suggested that the government was not spending money to campaign for the creation of regions or to fight against the creation of regions. The government does not spend money on that. As stated by the President, he is motivated by those who have submitted a petition. And I am sure that when you contacted your colleagues in the regions, you may have seen that the petitioners for the creation of new regions bought their own pickups, t-shirts. It was said that some songs were created to campaign. So the petitioners themselves are doing it, "he added.

The Minister of Reorganization and Regional Development said: "What the government is doing and will continue to do is the education process, it is the work of the Electoral Commission that has to carry out all this which is necessary for this exercise to begin. "
