Some people have been arrested by the Dansoman District Police Command for allegedly heading to Dansoman Beach to take advantage of Easter.
Police during the week issued several warnings to the public to refrain from going to the beach due to restrictions imposed by the president.
Some people defied the directive on Dansoman Beach, however, and were apprehended by a security team on the shore.
Nearby residents who witnessed the incident spoke to Citi News.
One of the eyewitnesses said, “There were soldiers here and police personnel with two jeeps and a helicopter and they arrested three boys and took them away. I think they’re going to leave them, but maybe a few small punishments for being stubborn in coming out for a swim when they shouldn’t.
Another witness also said: “I arrived and was told that one of my uncles had been arrested along with a friend of his and also heard that two other boys had also been arrested. So in total, I think four people were arrested and sent to Dansoman police station.
Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command has said it will not relax its efforts to ensure COVID-19 restrictions are enforced on beaches.
Greater Accra Police Command Public Relations Officer DSP Efia Tenge said the service will not give up its efforts to ensure that COVID-19 restrictions are met during the Easter period.
“We have already advised people against doing this, so we had staff on all the beaches in Accra to make sure people don’t defy safety protocols or decrees.
“So beaches like Krokobite, The Beach and the like all had enhanced beach security and in the future we would expect people not to come to the beaches to celebrate Easter.”
Police warning earlier
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service had reminded the public to comply with COVID-19 restrictions to stop the spread of the virus.
The police department in a statement said that although churches and mosques can hold services, no longer than two hours, public gatherings such as conventions, crusades, pilgrimages cannot take place during the season.
“Churches, mosques and religious organizations are expected to hold no more than two hours for up to 100 participants only, observing all other COVID-19 protocols. Such large conventions, crusades, pilgrimages and physical gatherings are not permitted. ”
He also said that the organization of any carnival, festival, beach rally, street dances, procession, parades and such events would be illegal.
“Night clubs are banned from opening, as are cinemas and cinemas. All activities of a “closed room” bar or pub, including those of hotels, remain illegal. However, outdoor drinking points can work as long as they follow all other COVID-19 protocols, ”he added.
