In this new study, Adnin Zaman, an endocrinology researcher at the University of Colorado's School of Medicine, and his colleagues monitored the sleep, physical activities, and eating habits of 31 overweight and obese patients aged 36 and over. years on average.

Participants were enrolled in a weight loss trial comparing daily caloric restrictions to a restricted diet over time, which meant that they could only eat during certain hours of the day.

They wore an activPAL electronic device on the thigh to measure the time they spent on physical and sedentary activities. They also used Actiwatch to evaluate sleep and waking habits, as well as a phone application called MealLogger to photograph and timestamp the food they eat throughout the day.

The researchers found that on average, participants ate food for 11 hours during the day. They also slept about 7 hours a night.

Those who ate later in the day slept later but had the same amount of sleep as participants who ate earlier. Late eaters also tend to have a higher BMI and body fat than those who eat earlier.

"These results corroborate our overall study, which will look at whether limiting the time spent on consumption earlier in the day will reduce the risk of obesity," Zaman said.
