Washington: While dementia affects people around the world, many people can escape or reduce the risk of this cognitive disorder by adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Dementia is a disorder in which the person experiences a loss of cognitive functioning, such as thinking, remembering and reasoning. The disorder interferes with a person's daily life and activities. It is caused by a head injury, a stroke or a brain tumor.
According to CNN, dementia affects about 50 million people worldwide.
However, the World Health Organization has suggested that progression of the disease could be delayed by exercising regularly, avoiding smoking, consuming less alcohol, maintaining a healthy blood pressure and eating well.
In an effort to combat dementia, WHO has also emphasized the need to avoid dietary supplements such as vitamins B and E.
"While some people are unlucky and inherit a combination of genes that makes them very likely to develop dementia, many have the opportunity to significantly reduce their risk by adopting a healthy lifestyle," said Professor Tara Spiers, principal investigator of the study, -Jones.
She further explained: "The WHO has reviewed the available evidence and made recommendations that some lifestyle changes, especially the increase in exercise before the onset any cognitive symptoms, can reduce the risk of dementia. "
It is of utmost importance to properly manage weight, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia – unhealthy or unhealthy cholesterol levels to reduce the risk of disorder.
